He married Sarah Jane Dodd 24 November 1859 in Hall Co., GA and later married Mariah Duke. There were five Barton brothers who served in Company L of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV under Captain Sanford Tramel and then Captain Alonson Edwards: Jonathan, Gilford, James, Madison, and William H. They had three brothers-in-law who also served in the regiment: F.C. Harris, Jesse D Hyde, and Thomas H Blackstock. Buried: Dodd (Cap Baughn) Cemetery near Lynn, Winston Co., AL
