There are quite a few men listed in the combined service record of the 1st Alabama who are noted to be "colored." Although many of them served in support rolls such as undercooks or teamsters, as did many other blacks throughout the Civil War, there is evidence that at least one man was wounded in action and another was killed while enlisted as troopers in the 1st Alabama Cavalry.

While limited in numbers, the 1st Alabama was an integrated unit when many blacks were subject to service in units later designated United States Colored Troops throughout the Civil War.
